How to clean & care for your Egyptian cotton bed linen

The good news is that Egyptian cotton improves with age and with every wash!

You can wash our 100% Egyptian cotton bed sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases in the washing machine. Just follow the instructions on the care label. We recommend washing your bed linen before use and once a week thereafter.

How to care for your Egyptian cotton bed linen

To keep your Egyptian cotton sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases in tip top condition:

  • Wash before use.
  • Machine wash at 40° once a week using non-bio (enzyme free) detergent or go greener at 30°.
  • Tumble dry at low heat - use Scooms Wool Tumble Dryer balls to reduce drying time and creases naturally: Buy here.
  • Be careful not to leave your bedding in the dryer for longer than necessary. Over-drying your cotton bedding can damage the fibres and may cause the cotton to shrink.
  • Iron damp - steam iron on a high 3-dot steam iron setting.
  • Egyptian cotton bed linen will soften each time you wash it unlike most bed linen and become more comfortable to sleep with the more you use it.

Top tips for washing and drying your Egyptian cotton bedding:

  1. Separate your bed linen from the rest of your laundry and wash whites together.
  2. Avoid overcrowding your machine or washing your bed linen with heavy items, like towels, as this may damage your bed linen and cause it to lose its shape.
  3. Do up the buttons on the duvet cover to prevent other items getting stuck inside the duvet cover.
  4. Only wash your bedding at the recommended temperature, not higher than 40°, as this may damage the cotton fibres and cause shrinkage.
  5. Use a good quality laundry detergent which works well at lower temperatures.
  6. Add a gentle fabric conditioner for extra softness if you like.
  7. Only use non-chlorine bleach if using.
  8. Treat stains individually before a general wash and carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  9. Only tumble dry your bedding on the low heat setting as a higher temperature will damage the cotton fibres and may lead to shrinkage.
  10. Air-dry your white sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases occasionally in the sunshine to keep them bright white.
