How to make your bedroom cosy this winter
Now that the nights are becoming colder, it's time to get your bedroom autumn and winter ready. Make sure your bedroom is cosy, warm and comfortable, so you can get a good night's sleep even on the chilliest of nights.
Change to a warmer duvet
Have you swapped your light, summer duvet for a warmer tog duvet yet? If you're feeling a little cold at night then it's time to dial up to a higher tog. We recommend a 9 tog duvet for chillier nights or a 4.5 tog duvet for hot sleepers.
Opt for a high quality duvet with a natural filling like our Hungarian goose down duvet, which provides greater insulation without feeling overly heavy. Our 9 tog duvet has been designed to be warm and cosy with the perfect body drape so there won't be any cold spots while you sleep. The naturally breathable filling encourages air to circulate and moisture to evaporate so your duvet stays airy and cloud-like.
Deep clean your bedding
The changing of the seasons is a great time to give your bedding a thorough clean and ensure your sleep environment is fresher and healthier. Wash items which are often overlooked like your pillows, duvet and mattress protector. Always carefully follow the care instructions provided and make sure all your bedding is completely dry before replacing it on your bed or storing it away.
Take the opportunity to give your mattress a good airing, wipe or vacuum. And remember to flip your mattress over and around so that it wears evenly.
Layer with luxurious bedding
Every layer in your bed during the winter months should add a touch of extra cosiness, whilst helping to naturally regulate your temperature as you sleep. Choose luxurious but breathable materials which both look and feel great. Our Egyptian cotton sheets and duvet covers are crafted in a sateen weave which has a smooth silky-soft feel and soothing drape, as well as looking fabulously elegant. We also have a range of relaxed Linen bedding in soft tones of white, grey and pink for an effortless laid back look. Light, soft and breathable, Linen has great insulation properties, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Adding a cosy throw in natural fibres like wool or cashmere can give you another layer of warmth for really cold nights or something to snuggle into while reading before bed. As well as bringing some colour and texture to your bed, to make it look even more inviting!
Create a winter sanctuary
Other design and décor elements can help to turn your bedroom into a relaxing winter sanctuary. Choose colours with a warm, earthy tone or in rich jewel shades of deep green and dark plum. Opt for plush throws, cushions and rugs in tactile materials like wool, velvet and cotton. Add soft mood lighting with warm-toned lamps or dimmable switches for a more relaxing ambience. Use natural scented candles and diffusers with calming fragrances of lavender, geranium and chamomile to help get you in the mood for sleep.
Transition to sleep
What else can you do to ensure you get a good night's sleep during the colder weather? A comfortable bedroom temperature is vital, ideally around 16-18 degrees Celsius as your body needs to cool slightly before slumber. Having the heating on too high may lead to a hot restless night and should be unnecessary if you have the right bedding keeping you toasty warm. Creating an evening routine with a warm shower or bath and a restful read with gentle lighting can help your mind to calm and your body to switch to rest mode. Try to stick to a regular sleep pattern, rising and going to sleep at a similar time and get as much natural light as you can during the day, both of which are important for your circadian rhythm.
