Scandinavian sleep method
What is the Scandinavian sleep method?
In the Scandinavian sleep method, couples sleeping in the same bed use two separate duvets rather than sharing a duvet. The separate bedding allows each person to sleep how they want without disturbing their partner, avoiding the need for two separate beds despite differing sleep habits and preferences. If it works for you, the Scandinavian sleep method should make it easier for you and your partner to fall asleep and remain asleep.
In our blog, we explore the pros and cons of using the Scandinavian sleep method at home, and provide some top tips for making it work.
How to make your bed using the Scandinavian sleep method
- Use two single size duvets on your normal size bed: Best for king or super king size beds but also good for double size beds.
- Purchase the duvet fill that you like best: No compromising with your other half. If you want a goose down duvet and they want a microfibre duvet, then you can both get the duvet type you want.
- Choose your preferred duvet tog: One of you may be a hot sleeper and your partner always chilly at night. Pick the duvet tog that's right for you.
- Ditch the flat sheet: Generally a top sheet isn't used with this sleep method.
- Fold or layer: Either fold each duvet in half or layer one duvet on top of the other when not sleeping.
- Add a decorative throw or cushion: If you want to cover the join, add a throw or cushion to provide a more homogenous and pleasing look to your bed.
What are the benefits of the Scandinavian sleep method?
- Less sleep disturbance: If you or your other half are restless sleepers and tend to move around a lot, you shouldn't be woken or kept awake by the other person, resulting in a better night's sleep.
- No more duvet hogging: Neither of you will be pulling the duvet in their direction or rolling over and dragging the duvet off the other person.
- The right temperature: Both of you should be sleeping at your ideal temperature as you get to choose your own duvet fill and duvet tog. So hot sleepers and cold sleepers can still share a bed.
- Autonomy when co-sleeping: Ideal for co-sleepers if one is an early riser and the other is a night owl. It's much easier to slip in or out of bed without waking the other person if you have your own duvet.
- Cost savings: No need to buy two beds if your partner is keeping you awake, buying two duvets and duvet covers instead is definitely more economical.
- Better than 'sleep divorce': Allows a couple to remain physically close in bed together rather than sleeping in different beds or completely separate bedrooms.
What are the cons of the Scandinavian sleep method?
- No more cuddles: Nighttime cuddles and spooning can be more difficult if you both have to manoeuvre yourselves under a single duvet.
- Too much duvet: Trying to fit two single duvets on a double or king size bed could be tricky as the duvets may overlap on the bed and there may be too much bunched up duvet to sleep comfortably.
- Duvet overhang on smaller beds: The width of two single duvets may be much greater than the width of your bed, so that either the duvets hang down too far over the edges of the bed or you end up with an overlap. Both of which could make it more difficult to sleep well.
- Bad bed aesthetics: It can be difficult to make the bed look attractive with two duvets lying next to each other. A cosy wool throw layered over the top can hide the untidy duvet join or overlap, as well as adding a pop of colour and texture that makes the bed look more aesthetically pleasing.
- Double the laundry: Extra covers to wash weekly and two duvets to wash every few months.
- It won't fix all sleep disturbances: Some sleep issues like snoring, sleep talking and restless leg syndrome probably won't be helped by separate duvets, so separate beds or bedrooms might be the only solution.
Why is it called the Scandinavian sleep method?
This sleeping style is popular in Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Swedish influencer Cecilia Blomdahl popularised the Scandinavian sleep method in October 2023 when her TikTok post went viral.
